Chapter 24

Raiden

“Melinda, are you all right?” Raiden knelt and grabbed Melinda’s shoulder, supporting her. His eyes darted between Zumi and her guards. Zumi was an intimidating woman. She wore a long robe made of white cloth, and both of her hands were covered in blue gloves decorated with red diamonds. The gloves emitted blue light. She must have been pouring her magic into those gloves to keep them emitting light.

Show-off.

Zumi also held a small staff. It was a foot long, a beautiful piece of metal and wood fused together and topped with a ruby at the tip. The ruby illuminated the staff with red light. Compared to Zumi’s, Melinda’s staff was a wooden stick. The vast difference in their weapons stuck with him, but he wasn’t sure whose was more powerful.

Zumi’s twelve bodyguards wore armor similar to Type Two spell’O’armor, so all twelve could probably wield magic. Thirteen versus two was an unfair number, and Raiden was going to change the odds. He just had to figure out how.

“Melinda, can you stand and engage the main enemy for few moments?” he asked.

Melinda managed to gain her feet. “What are you thinking, kid? She is as strong as a chief of the royal guards. Even ten years back, she was difficult to defeat, and looking at her staff now I can only assume she has gathered more power.”

“I’m going to target the guards behind her. Thirteen against two are unfair odds, and I’m going to even them.”

“Okay. Here I go.” Melinda conjured a fireball even larger than he had seen before, easily one meter wide. Power rippled from the core of the fireball and radiated enough heat to make Raiden feel uncomfortable, even though he was standing couple feet away.

How much magic she is putting into that?

She could have easily destroyed all the twelve men with that fireball.

Melinda fired the ball toward the twelve men, but Zumi was quick to jump in between and nullify the spell with her own fireball, which was just as strong as Melinda’s. Zumi had conjured hers quicker than Melinda. She was strong, really strong, or Melinda had become weak.

Raiden jumped in the air and landed in between them, his fist striking the ground with as much force as he could muster. The impact was so strong that the guards nearest to him were thrown back. He took advantage of the situation and knocked four of the standing ones down with a roundhouse kick. So far, none of the mages he’d faced had good physical strength. His kick combined with the power of his armor easily knocked them down.

“That’s impressive, whoever you are.” Zumi spoke in her delicate voice.

Four down, eight to go.

Raiden took a quick running stance and dashed toward the four guards who were trying to stand up.

His head and shoulder collided with them, knocking them back down. He stood, and with a straight kick knocked out one, then another, then another, but the fourth one had already jumped back.

Raiden faced five of them now, back on their feet and shooting various spells at him.
